Mahabodhi

Ph. D. Program in Buddhist Studies

Buddhism is what was realized and taught by the greatest sage that India has ever produced, Siddhartha Gotama, the Buddha. The Supreme Buddha’s teachings are clear explanation of ultimate truths and how to realize them and experience peace, happiness in the life. Buddha is not the name of a person but a title meaning Awakened-One. This state of Sammasambodhi, supreme enlightenment is achieved through the hard work and determination of fulfilling ten exalted spiritual qualities called Parami.

Some take Buddhism to be a religion; but it is far beyond just being religion since it leads one to freedom from suffering. Others regard it as a philosophy, yet again it is much higher than philosophy because it transforms practically one’s consciousness and makes a person noble one, Ariya. Some people call it pure psychology just because the Supreme Lord analyses every aspect of the mind. Yes, it is super psychology no doubt. but it is not limited to mind alone. The spectrum of Buddhism covers, mind, matter, their interconnectedness and the beyond called Nibbana.

Buddhism is also not a kind of the mysterious mysticism as some understand it because even mystic states are understood in Buddhist psychology to be just different altered mental states. Though psychotherapy can adopt immense practical methods from the compassionate teachings of the Buddha to treat and manage the sick minds, it is not just psychotherapy as some people considers it. Buddhism goes beyond and it cures all ills of life, including the dukkha of repeated birth, old age, sickness and death, suffering due to ignorance and cravings. Buddhism also covers the ultimate ethics, mental empowerment, cultivation of wisdom to the highest. Buddhism also takes one to the pinnacle of human civilization and thereby true social peace and harmony. So put it in a nutshell, Buddhism is that glorious golden path which brings us happiness and freedom from suffering here and now and also it leads to ultimate enlightenment, Nibbana. Nibbana, the ultimate aspiration of Buddhists is a state in which the mind is purged and purified of all ego conceit and all traces of attachment, greed, aversion, hatred and delusion.

Buddhism is not dependent on blind faith but on the understanding of experience through the use of human intelligence. It is not based on history or a story which he proved false would tumble down, but stands on the odd rock of personal experience. One cannot be saved by any external means but he has to save himself through his own efforts and right techniques developed by wisdom. “Atta Dipa bhava” Buddhism is a gradual path of spiritual evolution where man transcends human weaknesses and attains perfection of mind, and finally solves the problem of existence, attains Nibbana.

All problems in life bind to one problem called Dukkha or suffering. Suffering is not just poverty, starvation and sickness and so forth which modern man commonly talks about. It is more related to mental suffering in the form of confusion, anxiety, depression, grief, worry, restlessness and so forth which are mainly psychological states. Dukkha is also the very imperfect and impermanent state of everything which can never satisfy one’s desires. Normally these external conditions or mental states are considered to be the fault of circumstances. This is why these are seen commonly as economic or social or different problems. Yet the Buddha points out that they are caused by our mental attitudes and reactions to circumstances, not by the objects or situations themselves. If you really check up inside our mind we will find this is true.

The solution of our problems in life is the eradication of unrealistic desires which clash with reality and frustrate us and cause us unhappiness. We have to awaken from our world of dreams and come down to reality, to face and accept the reality as it is. If Buddhism is understood and practiced by mankind, this earth would become a place of harmony and happiness, happiness not through plenty and power, but happiness through absence of wants and wisdom. The research in Buddhist studies is an honest and sincere attempt to eradicate the human mental, psychosomatic, existential and societal problems.
